Article: Why convergence is doomed (by Tom Hespos, 11.10.07)
Link: http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/16890.asp
Summary:
The author of the article looks into the convergence of television and the internet, where the internet gives a “lean back” rather than “lean forward”  television feel.
We’ve seen the failure of this convergence with TV tuner cards, PC-based entertainment centers etc.
The bringing together of 2 entities which we love (TV and the internet) will not exactly be a good thing. In this case bringing together two good things doesn’t make a great one.
Competitive threats -
Jumping on the technology bandwagon of this convergence and the failure to foresee certain failures.
JOOST:  One problem is that they options of obtaining content; from iTunes, a content provider's website, or from a peer-to-peer network and the flexibility of playback on various devices.

From the consumers point of view, delivery of product is not what’s expected. Example by the making of a more passive computer which won’t work since expectations are for a computer to be interactive.

“Convergence will come into its own when companies in the space realize that things like P2P technologies are great distribution mechanisms for content, but that computers themselves are not the greatest environments for passive consumption.”

This all proves that all that glitters isn’t gold.

Article: Is the Future of Television Online? Not Yet (by by Jennifer Woodard Maderazo 10.08.07)
Link: http://tinyurl.com/28n4yt
Summary:
The author of the article looks into the offering of shows on their websites and other ways (iTunes) by network television providers (abc, bbc). But most have jurisdiction and OS compatible issues.
Both advertisers and viewers benefits from this where advertisers get more viewers and viewers get the shows when they want.
Disadvantages of watching TV online - Discomfort, Video clips stop, connections time out, sound turns choppy . youtube - your show is in parts due to the limited file size and length limit.
She then relates the difference  of her computer and her TV. (TV- disconnected from world,  Computer - email alerts, message pops etc)
She then spoke about TV’s ability to broadcast “live”. In realtime with better quality.
TV Content Online has evolved. Gone are the days of only being allowed to watch your shows when they are scheduled.
With online TV, content is on demand, which can be accessed essentially, whenever and wherever. And with faster broadband speeds, the online TV experience has become more comfortable and enjoyable, with quicker downloads and better quality.
The desire to view online content is here, with users uploading the shows with idea of Internet-TV convergence sounding good in thought, but in reality needs to be thoroughly looked at before implementation. So in the mean time we’ll keep our TVs and Computers.

--------------------------------

Honestly, my thoughts on TV INTERNET convergence  is neither here or there. I like the separation based on all the above thoughts and to think, having friends over to watch your computer doesn’t sound that exciting. I don’t mind watching TV online as i usually “lean back and relax” when doing so. I mainly watch TV online anyways, because of my hectic lifestyle. But I would really like to see the ultimate entertainment communications tool,
where the converging of the two makes things simpler rather that complicated.

With TV networks eager to get their content out there,  in my opinion, convergence isn’t doomed yet.
